Finding the right plus size special occasion dresses
Plus-sized women sometimes have a hard time looking for the right plus size special occasion dresses. Most people make the mistake of thinking of plus size special occasion dresses as glorified tents. The truth is, there are a lot of fashionable ensembles available for large women.
A lot of plus-sized women aren’t necessarily fat, but voluptuous, and have a lot of attractive features they can play on. In fact, during the earlier centuries (particularly, the Baroque period), plus-sized women were celebrated and seen as ideally beautiful.
If you’re plus sized, you have to remember that the key to picking the right kind of plus sized special occasion dresses is the color. Always pick a shade that flatters your complexion and cuts a cleaner silhouette. Dark colors tend to create an illusion of slimness. Light colors tend to be unflattering (the same goes with colors that are too flashy). Subdued colors tend to work well with round forms, too.
Do not shy away from form-fitting, curve-hugging dresses as they help make you look more compact instead of balloonish. Dare to bare. The more you hide under your clothes, the more attention you draw to it. However, do not get dresses that are so tight, they cut off circulation and bunch up after more than an hour of wear.
Highlight your good features. For instance, if you have ample breasts, opt for tops with necklines that are low (not too low) enough to reveal and full bust. If you are broad-shouldered, refrain from wearing shoulder pads as you obviously don’t need them (this is particularly important when it comes to blazer tops—remove the shoulder pads or have one tailored especially for you without the pads). Those with narrow shoulders, on the other hand, would look good in halter dresses.
Explore the various benefits of wearing the right undergarments—lacy, silk, plain, cotton, stretch, white, black, skin-toned, whathaveyou. Celebrate your femininity with dainty bras and camisoles, or invest on a good form-fitting body suit. Find form-hugging underpants that help gather the body together, making it look more clean-cut and eliminating unsightly lumps. Look into the various seamless girdles and bust minimizers available in the market. For formal occasions, you can even try out a delicate satin corset. Refrain from using heavy fabrics as they tend to make the wearer look poofy and add unnecessary visual weight. Avoid glittery, neon-colored and rayon dresses, as well. Empire cuts are to be used with caution. Pleats can work for you, too. Draping dresses are flattering, especially when at a darker color.
Tall, plus-sized women can play on their height and wear long, flowing dresses for a more graceful silhouette, whereas shorter plus-sized models are better off with shorter dresses that go a little below the knee.
